The Golf Museum in Regensburg

Along with the well-known Scottish Golf Museum in St. Andrews the Golf Museum in Regensburg is the most important one in Europe. Golf history becomes accessible in the medieval cellars of a patrician manor, classified as a historical monument at the core of the city, not far from the cathedral!
Walking through the fascinating golf museum of the golf historian Peter Insam, citizen of Regensburg, Germany, turns out to be a colourful excursion to golf`s history.
More than 1200 rarities from all over the world of five centuries have been collected during the last 40 years by Peter Insam. They reflect the unforgettable beginnings of golf up to the present.
This collection, probably unique in its composition, shows the development of golf - accessible golf history for everyone.

It is an instructive and amusing walk through 700 years of golf history.
Next to a medieval well there is a display case showing club heads made of lead and pewter, which are more than 400 years old and Delft tiles with golf subjects of the 17th and 18th century.
You find "Morris woods and clubs" made of iron as well as brass putters in weathered leather bags dating from 1780-1930.
Valuable sculptures, for example the bronze sculpture, representing a pretty young female golfer, done by the German artist Ferdinand Preis in 1920 or the female bronze figure by the French artist Chiparus ( around the turn of the century ), show the glamour of this epoch.
You admire real curiosities like a St. Andrews menu signed by the American president Eisenhower.
You will smile about a 1922 score card of King George V. of England with its "lousy score" of His Majesty of considerable 117 strokes.
You find Germany`s first golf rules in a little booklet dating from the turn of the century.
Colossal rare posters, colourfully lithographed, adorn the wall, showing St. Andrews and other noble locations of the "Golden Twenties", reflecting the epoch`s "individual spirit". You can also have a look at those legendary "Featheryballs": leather golf balls filled with cooked quills, which revolutionized golf at the beginning of the 17th century.
Looking into the guest book of the golf museum you become aware of the visitors` excitation. The museum attracts guests and golfers from all over the world.

The Museum is open Monday to Saturday, 10.00 a.m. to 06.00 p.m.
